    parafin heater help

    i have had a paraffin heater in the greenhouse for about 6 weeks now and had good and bad results my heat has got upto around 50-60 my seedlings sprouted but then started to die off?
    i have only little ventilation to keep the heat in but the glass has all turned dark grey/black, i open the door a jar on warm days but has no effect im only growing bedding plants like petunia and marigold for the spring. have i started too early and do i still need the heater on?
    never used one before and little help where i look as in the past only used greenhouse for tomatoes and think i could do more with it.

    the blacking of the glass is caused by 2 things, you're flame is too big or you are not using grade one parafin. adjust wick height just so it stops smoking and then wind it down a tad more regards fuel look for it with the kite mark it must be refined. ventilate at all times and unless its forecast cold during the day i only run mine overnight.

      And clean the wick daily. Dirty wicks = uneven flame and smoke

        spent the afternoon cleaning the glass i think the seedlings need more light now and have turned the heater off since we have had no more frosts see how things go. would it been safe to seed more plants now or wait till it gets a bit warmer?

          If you can put your location on your post it would be helpful advice for Cornwall would be entirely different to advice for Scotland.

          And just a word of warning smoking paraffin heater equals Carbon Monoxide.

            I would suggest that ANY paraffin heater = Carbon Monoxide. Its a product of combustion however clean the flame is. Working in a closed greenhouse might be dangerous if the heater is lit.

                  No, the products of combustion with a well maintained and correctly aerated flame are as follows Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapour resulting form the chemical reaction and inert nitrogen that's already in the atmosphere. Its is only incomplete combustion where you find the presence of Carbon Monoxide.
