  • First earlies in yet?

Just wondering if anyone has risked putting in first earlies yet. This is my first full year in the allotment and am eager to get stuff in. Sorry if this has been covered a zillion times already!

Nope, not me. My soil's too wet and I can't nip up and down to the plot to protect them from frost.

Saying that, I am going to stick 3 of my 'spares' in a bag at home, 'cos I can do the in-out hokey cokey with them there.

I've put a few in, inside a little polytunnel - purely experimental
Open ground ones will be planted at Easter.

Mine are still chatting in the front porch, coming into the kitchen in really cold nights. Wasn't thinking of planting them until well into March

              Can I hi-jack and ask a question?

If it's to cold to plant and people are worrying about frost how do rogue potatoes live through everything and produce if left from the season before??

Cos they're rogues and they can get away with it
Its the foliage that suffers from frost (I think) so if they leaf up too early, a frost would knock them back.
You don't know how many rogues fall by the wayside cos you don't know how many there were to start with

I don't like to think about what will happen when Nannysally plants them in her bed

I understand your impatience, Toby! The first year I had a plot I planted my first earlies on 24th Feb (and I got away with it) - but I wouldn't push my luck again.

I'll get them in when the weather feels right and the ground has dried up a bit. Most likely middle to end of March (for here in the Midlands) will be fine.

Now that's a good question, never thought of that, maybe they keep their coats on, ( sorry, I'm being silly )
