    It must be Spring...my Marans are laying!!

    Well- they must think it's Spring- they only seem to lay between March and September- and we've had a couple from each of them over the last week.
    I'd forgotten how creamy they are compared to the other eggs we have!

    They are still a reasonable colour ...much like this....



    Egg count up to an average 5 eggs a day compared to 2 max a day from all my gals.

    Is everyone else getting more eggs now?

    Mine started in earnest about a fortnight ago, they are laying every day again which is nice as the other half has started baking again. I do love spring.

          I'd love to have some egg laying personnel on site (particularly ducks and geese), but the back yard of a terraced house just ain't suitable. I am officially jealous

                I had 2/3 hens laying all winter......since spring I've had one egg a day....and an occasional 'other'.

                Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

                Maybe I need some Marans

                  Maybe yours are Northern Hemisphere chooks Feral?


                  Perhaps it's just been too hot for them to want to lay? Ours cut back when the temps hit about 30C

                    No you don't Feral, they are the laziest birds ever and the minute they start to lay they go broody! I forgive mine cos they're friendly...

                      Marans going broody??....mine are even too lazy to bother with that!!!

                      They are also gentle birds but not as friendly as our Light Sussex which have also laid right through the winter!

                        The green ones come from a cotswold legbar, its a hybrid bird and while she is the bottom of the class for brains she is by far the most entertaining.

                          The batties are tops for entertaining! Weird little birds they are

                          Not sure if I should try for some more Isa Browns (only one of the two I have is laying) or something different. Decisions, decisions.

                          But I'd like some more eggs!

                              My maran crosses have started laying again, although not every day yet. One started, laid 3 or 4, had half a day being broody (in February??), laid one more egg then stopped. Until today, when she's laid again, yay! It's a very pale colour though - is it normal for a young bird who normally lays dark brown to be laying light brown??

                              My 2 newbies are 'supposed' to be pure maran, but I'd bet my life they aren't. Friendly yes, but bonkers, and very energetic! They started to lay recently and are laying lovely dark brown eggs most days, although smaller than the older crosses. Maybe they'll get bigger later?

                              I've still got several birds not laying at all - too cold / wet / windy / don't like their pellets / want to live in the porch... any excuse really .
