  • bluish film over chickens eye? any idea's anyone please

    hello all
I haven't been on here for a while but thought I would contact the 'experts'! on here to see if they can help.
my chicken is approx. 5/6 she was a rescue hen so not sure of age. yesterday I noticed what looks like a bluish film covering half of her eye. she doesn't seem as perky as she usually does and have noticed her sitting with her head in her wing sometimes. I am taking her extra food/treats and she appears to be still eating and drinking and no abnormal poos as yet. any idea's anyone?. my other chicken is absolutely fine. thanks in advance.

Can you take her to the vet to get her checked out, chickens can get cataracts, but there is also a parasite which can cause blurring of the eye which is treatable with the right medication.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

I'd say go to the vet- it may be something simple- or contagious and respond with treatment...or it might be something she can live with.

She may even have been pecked by one of the others. They like shiny things like eyes.

Chickens' eyelids are kind of a blueish grey colour - maybe it's the lid you can see? I think they close from the bottom up rather than the top down, so if the half that's covered is across the bottom that might be it? In which case she may have been pecked as Glutton says, or damaged her eye or something, although if she seems otherwise a bit unhappy or unwell I'd definitely take her to the vet, just to be sure.

Yeh...that's a thought kathy...they do tend to half close their inner eyelids if they are feeling unwell.....from the front corner near the beak , backwards.
