Morning. After the surprising success of my late planted cucumber last year (which I believe was Burpless), I'm eager to try some others for this year. A quick browse of the forum archives has revealed Crystal Lemon as a popular choice from a few years ago. I've never heard of it until just now, but it looks unusual, so I'll definately try that one. I'm looking for at least one other variety, possibly two if I have space. All varieties will be grown under glass. The attributes I'm most interested in are reliability and taste (yield, plant vigour, fruit size/shape, are all valued but of less importance to me). What would you recommend?

Can't go wrong with the burpless. Comes highly recommended. I will be growing them this year
I did grow a grafted plant from suttons last year. Called fitness. Was impressive. Produced loads of huge tasty cucumbers. I don't think it's on there site this year though. I tried the lemon cucumbers in 2012. Wasn't impressed but it wasn't a good year

Burpless is a nice reliable cue,have tryed several others and not been impressed,i am going to give Galileo a try this year,sounds like it could tick boxes,taste has yet to be found out,sigpicAnother nutter ,wife,mother, nan and nanan,love my growing places,seed collection and sharing,also one of these

It's all personal taste really but I hated the crystal lemon and I didn't like the white cucumbers either. I now stick to the green ones! Burpless has also always done really well for me as well telegraph and also the small snack size cues like picolino.Last edited by Scarlet; 22-01-2014, 11:44 AM.Comment

My recommendation is don't grow them!
Not only are they quite a trouble to get growing, but they take up a lot of greenhouse space better used for other things which actually taste nice, and then you get so many cucumbers that you don't know what to do with them. Short of eating them in cucumber sandwiches or with salads, what else can you do with these tasteless 'fruits'? If you want to make soup, better to use courgettes.
But then, perhaps there ARE people who actually LIKE cucumbers!Comment

Grow the outdoor ones such as market more 76
I've had 30 plus cucumbers per plant over the past two summers.
This year I'm also trying a really early outdoor one from realseeds

Telegraph were quite reliable for us, especially considering how rubbish I am at growing cucumbers. Also the snack sized ones already mentioned, I think we grew Cucino, tasted lovely the ones we got that weren't pilfered by 2 children sneaking into the greenhouse, giggle giggle crunchComment

I had great success with the smaller sized ones which are great as they can be used for pickling and are small enough for small salad bowls....(rarely use a full one)
Long name like Cettriolo di Parisien...I will look it up later and post..I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

Market more 76..I grew them last year having switched from burpless and I was inundated with cues.gave loads away to friends and family.
So I hope it will be the same this year"if im not up the allotment...im up the caravan"

My local Garden Centre Group (formerly Wyevales) has a seed packet sale in September for 50p a packet, and if I find Cucumber seed there I buy two packets (last year I got Bella F1 - that's normally £5 for 4 seeds
). If that fails, or seed isn't available in the sale, I buy plants instead. That solves the early season growing-on stage, and most of the period that they are likely to succumb to stem-rot or getting bruised during potting-on. But my local garden centre is hit-and-miss as to what they get in - last year they only had Mini-Cues - although they do take orders for plants, so advice #2 is if you are thinking of buying plants best to order them in advance. I have found plants cost little more, if anything, than the F1 seed.

There are only two of us so I grow small cumbers.
My favourite is Baribal F1 tons of fruit and tasty to.
