Nettle tea is a bit high on nitrogen for tomatoes. Comfrey tea is better IMO.

If you have access to seaweed that makes a really good liquid feed for toms. Relatively high in potassium and magnesium and loads of trace elements. I make 10+ gallons every year and dilute it about 5 to 1.

Sorry to hijack this thread but Solway cropper - I have access to a large amount of Bladderwrack..

Is this suitable? Could I trouble you to post a method?

Also would you say this works as well as a popular well known tomato liquid feed?

You can start them off in buckets by all means, but you'll need to get them in the ground as soon as. They don't really like being in pots, but the main reason is that their roots go deep down, drawing up nutrients, which is why they make a good feed.

I just gather it up and bung it in a big drum for a few months. Put a lid on cos it stinks!

The liquid is decanted into 5 litre bottles for ease of use and the smelly weed put on the compost heap.

Just make sure there no local bye-laws prohibiting the gathering of seaweed. (some councils like to spoil everybody's fun)

not sure how it compares with commercial products but it certainly works in combination with my compost-enriched soil.
