  • Bark on young cherry tree peeling away

    Hi guys,

I planted a maiden cherry tree in the autumn. It lives in a large (100l) container for now, until I find a more permanent place for it. It has got two side branches, both of which have got buds on them so I presume they are (or were!) healthy. However when I checked up on it this morning I noticed that the bark on one of the side branches has split, appr. 6cm long, in the middle of the branch. I can peel the bark back a little bit but the wood is still fairly soft, i.e. it doesn't feel like a dead branch.

My question is, really, why is my tree doing this and is it a problem? Should I prune the branch back and just wait for new side branches to develop over the course of the year?

I will add some pictures as soon as the battery on my camera has charged up.

Edited to add: I've now added some pictures. Sorry about them not being very clear but it's the best my old camera can do! It's a 'Sunburst' cherry tree on Gisella 5 rootstock.

Sometimes cherries have bark which peels off but they are not necessarily diseased.
The pictures will give an idea if anything is wrong but I wouldn't be too worried at the moment.

It might also be useful to state the variety and the rootstock in case someone has experience of that variety and because some varieties are known to be more prone to certain problems than others.
