  • hen ear discharge

I am wanting some advice as I am unsure if one of my girls has an ear infection. She looks like she is moulting as the coop has a large quantity of feathers when I clean it out. When I was checking her today I noticed what looked like clear discharge from her ears. She seems perky enough and is still laying. I am not sure if this is a problem or not. I have been giving all my girls poultry spice with there morning porridge to give them a boost as it has been really cold up here (Glasgow).

Is there any other signs that she may be ill? It may be a ear infection which would need to be treated with antibiotics. Is she steady on her feet, any wobbling?
Moulting at this time of year is normal so I wouldn't worry about the feather loss.
I would keep an eye on her and if she starts to get worse or goes off her food I would tele her to the vet.

I had a hen with a recurring ear discharge. I used to treat it with antibiotic ear ointment prescribed for dogs and it did the trick for several months to a year but she had a chronic condition which I believe may have resulted from a respiratory disease contracted when she was very young. She lived without any other trouble till she was 12yrs old.
