  • The Cobra's Allotment

Hi all. Just thought I'd create myself a thread for people to look over at the progress of our allotment. There are 3 of us sharing 2 allotment plots. This is one of them, pics to follow of the other plot. Will give me something to look back on over the years.

A few of the pics are of our lovely view!

In Castleford, West Yorkshire. The view from the allotment looks right over Leeds, which is a fair distance!! It definitely was a draw for me when I saw how nice the view was. And made me decide that my shed will be at the highest point. At the minute there is a old hut there, but we're gonna knock this down and put a new shed in

I would consider cutting that tree down before it gets so big you are forbidden too, particularly if its on the south side of your plot. My garden is blighted with huge trees on my southern border. You are very lucky to have a plot like that and i shall watch it blosom.

Thanks Bill, definitely something to consider. Would be nice to see the tree in full bloom in the summer

I truly hate cutting down trees, but sometimes they are in the wrong place and there is a minimum legal size (It used to be 3inches diameter) that is allowed to cut one down. If I had to cut one down I would plant several others elsewhere.

Don't understand that bit about minimum legal size ^^^^ Bill
Cobra - what type of tree is it? Before you do anything rash....... Also you may need the agreement of the allotment management to cut down a tree.

I seem to remember that there was a rule that you couldnt cut any tree down without planning permission if it was more that 3 inches across (which is really quite small) and I am sure in this case just one tree wouldnt make a lot of difference to shade etc. And yes the land owners permission would be needed as well as permission from the local council. That would usualy not be granted unless the tree was dangerous or diseased.

Not that I know of Bill, I'm cutting "trees" of that size down all the time. Maybe if it was in a conservation area or an area of special landscape value..........

I don't think I'll be cutting it down anyway - it's the only tree down that side of the plot, and to be honest I don't think it will shade much. I also like a little bit of cover, as long as it doesn't impede my growing crops obviously

When its sizzling hot and my family are all lying on sunbeds etc, I pitch my chair under a tree, But when you have a small garden and two huge trees directly to the south of you it becomes an issue. i get a couple of hours sunshine in the morning, then two hours shade, about half an hour mid- day before the second tree takes over until late afternoon.
