  • 2 greenhouses-what to grow?

    Hello,
We've recently bought our first house. The lady who lived there left us her glass greenhouse. We also have our own one, which is a lot smaller though. So the question is what would you grow?
This year I had just about enough room for 5 tomato plants and 2 cucumber plants in my old greenhouse. Thinking about growing a bit more of them but don't really want to cram both greenhouses with tomatoes and cucumbers (in my mind the most common things to grow in a greenhouse). Any help in deciding would be awesome

Whata about chilli plants, bell peppers, sweet peppers, aubergines for starters..

If I had a greenhouse one of the things I would try is a melon. Definitely peppers/chillies, and how about starting off some really early potatoes?

You could try growing all year round. I'm having success with growing salad leaves all year round so far. Looking into other stuff as well. I've bought this book to help me

Ive got the same dilemma. Got a nice 10 x 8 greenhouse at home for my toms, cues, peppers and chillis....and growing any flowers i want, and now been given a 12 x 8 for the allotment. Was thinking of planting a red and a white grapevine and trying melons, squash and maybe some sweet potatoes

If you're prepared to put the early season time in, as someone has already said, early crops...

Here's my thread from the spring:

btw, whatever that thread says, the carrots worked well in the end; I thinned, they grew...

Apart from the obvious toms etc, I grow loads of chilli's, peppers, aubergines, tried a melon this year which didn't grow to full size but will try again next year.

Last winter I put a grapevine in which has grown a nice framework this year, and I'm also getting two peach trees to put in this winter. One for each greenhouse to train as fans up one side.

I also start some potatoes early which this year didn't really gain much as it was so cold for so long but the year before I was harvesting Apr 29th from a sowing in mid Feb.

I do some tomatoes and cucumbers plus various herbs like basil and oregano and parsley in the front greenhouse and chillies, peppers and melons plus peach, apricot and fig in pots in the back greenhouse along with the comfy chair with an old radio to listen to my 60s/70s music, they even played "the runaway train" the other week on the local station....I know....really sad, but I hadn't heard it for over 40yrs and ,shamefaced, I still knew the words, I was back in 1963 for a few minutes, happy carefree days of childhood...

I grow lots of the summer stuff mentioned above, and also sow some early peas and stick some tatties in mid-Feb with extra fleece to cover. I've currently got some small carrots which I'm hoping will stand until Feb-ish, and a few spare brassicas - not essential to cover I know, but thought they'd be more protected and give earlier crops.... still picking caterppillars off them though, even now!! And found aphids the other day... * sigh *. Also planted some salads, and the remaining shallot and onion sets. I've avoided this previously because I was keeping the space for the following year's crops, but in fact most of the stuff under cover will be picked before I need the space again, and if it's not quite ready well, I can ditch it or keep the peppers etc in pots for a bit longer. Seems a shame to waste all that space, and I'm not losing anything by trying things out .
