  • Peppers when can you eat them

    It might be a silly question but do you have to ripen first? My peppers have are staying stubornly green, do I have to wait for them to turn red or can you eat them when they are still green?

    You can eat them green, they get sweeter as they change colour. To me, green peppers are quite bitter so I only use them in cooking, rather than red/orange/yellow which I eat anytime raw

      Put some banana skins or some very ripe apples near them. They'll start to turn fairly quickly.

        Thanks, I have had a couple come off the plant and didn't want to throw them away as nothing wrong with as far as I can tell.

          Are they definitely a type that does ripen to red? Some types don't change colour, some go red, some orange, brown or even purple

          Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

          Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

            We're busy turning all our remaining green peppers into ratatouille (or veggie mush as we lovingly call it ) and sticking it in the freezer .

              The seed packet is down the alotment and can't remember the type but they were red on the packet and the odd one has gone red so was expecting them all to be red.

                Just don't eat them after midnight..... I'm assuming you've seen gremlins




                Seriously though I cook green ones if I happen to knock one off before being ripe and yes they have a very strange taste if I want things to ripen at the end of the season I tend to hold off on watering seeming to kick start the colour change

                    I have some twilight ? ones and i found a red one the other day. I picked it
                    and had a bite.

                    Juicy i thought and not hot. 5 seconds later i think OK i changed my mind its now hot.

                    Not as hot as my little demon red ones get but the delay in the hotness was a bit strange.

                    Plenty of unripe ones and they taste awful. So im hoping the weather warms a little to help them
                    along. But i do hope to overwinter them.

                      I brought mine in a few weeks ago and put them on the windowsill (advice from another thread), they sat there looking green for ages but we ate the first red one last night and now they all want a go

                          Peppers can be used green orange or red. Sweet peppers are sweetest when red. Chilli peppers are hottest when red. Pick them how you like them. I pick at green and red stages for both sweet and chilli. You can freeze them but can turn soft when that'd, though it doesn't materially affect cooking qualities.
