  • Rotation problems!

The beds where I want to plant my onions and garlic (Oct/Nov this year) are currently occupied with brassicas, some of which won't be lifted until next spring. Is there any mileage in planting the onions and garlic in pots to grow roots over the winter, and then transplant in the spring? Or would I be better just finding alternative places to plant outside straight away? Thx

I would just plant them somewhere convenient and leave them to it. Never been one for great consideration of rotation on a garden scale and also I would get them in now and not wait until Oct/Nov. When I have put mine in that late they have never really come to much the following year.

Garlics you are likely safe with but onions a bit more difficult.

Sadly they don't sell onion sets over here at this time of year, so I have to rely on someone coming to visit with spare baggage space, or someone going back to the UK and feeling kind! So October it is..

I do. They do much better for me in the unheated gh, than in the ground, over winter.

Then they go in the ground in March (and yes, the garlic does split into cloves. I keep it in the fridge until I plant it)

Thanks TS - I know I've read about people potting them up early in the year to plant later in spring, but I didn't know if it might be to soon to do it in the autumn.

Don't understand what you mean about your garlic though - do you put it in the fridge in autumn before sticking it in pots?

I buy supermarket garlic, all year round, and keep it in the fridge. When I want to plant some garlic, I take it out of the fridge
