  • Split tomato?

My money maker ( i think! ) tomatoes are all growing nicely and I have 1 HUGE 1, none of them are ripening but when I went and looked at them
This morning, the biggest 1 looks like it has a split all around the top of it......

Should I remove that 1 and hope the others ripen?

They split because of erratic watering. The compost gets dry so the skin of the tomato "sets" and then whey they get a good drink the fruit swells and splits the skin.

Taking the split one off won't make the others ripen, but the split could go mouldy.

The fruits swell after watering and sometimes this happens - I've had several, but they've all gone on to ripen ok on the plant. Just watch out for kritters taking advantage of the broken skin.

I have one tiny cherry tomato about 10 - 12mm in size. It looks like it has a perfectly
round window cut into it. The seeds are visible all perfectly in place.

        What would do that?

I have some splitting ones also. Been away a few weeks back and they didnt get
watered except by the rain. Dont think we got much over the 2 weeks at the start
        of August.

Those would be caterpillars, which have been this season's 'must have' bug-sessory.

Ok, now I'm annoyed - every single cherry tomato is splitting as soon as it starts to ripen

If I take them off the plant and bring them in to ripen, will they still split?

I hate the thought of throwing them away but don't have enough for chutney or anything as I only have the 1 plant

I had to throw all the big ones away cos they just wouldn't grow - turned out they were beef tomatoes as well
