just purchased 3 sweet potato plants whilst in Homebase, (half price)!. never grown them before, they look healthy, plan to put them on plot, any advice please?

If it was a truly silly thing to do I would have done it!!
I've only seen them growing in a polytunnel - don't know how they'd be outdoors - but, nothing ventured.............

I'm really looking forward to seeing the advice on this as we saw some sweet potato plants happily romping away, outside, at Hyde Hall last weekend.
The varieties were 'Beaugard' and 'T65' but we have no idea if the were started off under cover or just planted outside directly.
Would love to know other Grapes' experience with them.Comment

Having googled sweet potato 'Beaugard' nothing comes up but it wants me to look at sweet potatoe 'Beauregard' instead. I've got a pic of the label from Hyde Hall... maybe even the RHS get their labels wrong every now and again?! ; )Comment

They don't grow like conventional potatoes, they grow from the sprouts known as slips. You plant the slips which in turn grow the sweet potatoes. They need a long warm season so need to be undercover and pray for an indian summer.

Ok, I've now read the details!
They are Beauregard, it says : well drained,highly fertile and slightly acidic soil,full sun or part shade. Can be grown outside, in sunny, sheltered spot in parts of UK, or in greenhouse border or sunny spot indoors! Always start indoors,move outside from June, etc, etc
Vines can grow up to 2m in length and 45 cm across!
Harvest : underground tubers form in late Summer , ready for harvest few weeks later. Leaves can also be used in stir fries and salads!
Will plant them tomorrow and see what happens! I was thinking 'soup'!

I bought some Beauregard plants (not slips) from Suttons this summer. 3 have been in my daughter's conservatory since the beginning of June and are threatening to take over, they're locked in a struggle with the tomato plants. The 2 I planted on my allotment are pathetic little things in comparison. Have no idea what the yield will be but the conservatory grown ones are definitely looking promising.Comment
