    onions ready?

    Here are some pics of a red baron onion.

    The neck is very soft, and as can be seen the leaves have all flopped over, although most of the foliage is green, there is only a little brown.

    What do you think? Leave it? Or pull it?

    I have several like this They are approx 3" diameter....

    Yep, that's when I pull mine up. Leave them in the sun for a few days to go nice and dry

      ahhh, great ok. So how about storing them?

      If I pull them now, do I just dry them and leave them?

        Yes, leave them until you need an onion and then remember that they're still on the plot (under 6" of snow )

        Really, dry them off as much as poss, then you can plait them up. Don't keep them anywhere humid (like the kitchen) or they'll rot

                They look beautiful! Very nicely done!

                I've never grown onions before as with only half a plot and them being quite cheap to buy I've prioritised other things. This year I've grown shallots from seed and they're getting to a good size now and I can't wait to harvest them!

                I seem to have a thing for all things allium though and that pic is making me reconsider my 'no onion' rule!

                  They look really good, well done you. I've got shallots this year too, vikkib, not from seed though. First time I've been successful, so very pleased.

                      Strange my chickens managed to peck through chickenwire and take the tops off all my spring onions earlier this year.
                      I know it was them as it was only the side closest to the wire and I'd seen them eyeing it up for a while. I was stunned I as heard onions where bad for them,

                          They look brilliant (sets or seed?).

                          I'd hang them bulb through the holes in your table for a few days -- leaves and bulb will dry and birds will remove any beasties left on the roots.

                              Good onions, mine are a few weeks away I think, big bulbs on them, but still growing at great guns.

                              Having said that, I did harvest 50 or so silver skin onions this week, ready to be pickled. Yum!!!
