    Confused my onions for leeks

    About three weeks ago I puddled in what I thought were some leek seedlings. Looking more closely at them today, I realise they were actually some of the onion Santero which I'd grown from seed.

    Anyway, not really sure what I should do now. I assume onions won't do very well in leek holes, even though at the moment they actually look very strong. Should I try to pull them up and replant at the correct depth? Would that kill them? If I leave them to grow at the depth of the leek holes will they die anyway?

    It's my first year of growing leeks and onions from seed, and I've learnt my lesson - next year will be extra careful to label them.

    I would not have thought that leaving them in would produce anything. They bulk up depending on the length of daylight hours and I suspect that they are simply too small to produce a useful onion.

    If the space would be better used for any leeks then I would consider putting leeks in in their place. Although difficult to decide. My leeks are still small and taking up no real space. Guess you could plant both the onions and the leeks and simply harvest the onions in two or three months and then allow the leeks to grow on. Have you planted the leeks yet ?? If not get them in so they have time to grow.

    Recall something saying that if planted too deep then onions take on a more elongated shape, if shallow then they take on a more flattened shape. No mention of not surviving, all mine appear to be growing fine and I have none breaking the surface.

    Labels are useful things, I tend to grab a pack or two from Wilkinsons every year.

      A June sowing is too late to produce a good round onion, really. They need sowing April at the latest (some start in Dec-Jan under glass)

      You might get spring onions off them though

        if they are in deep, shake them loose gently with a small fork and lift them but do try not to break the roots. Firm them in nearer the surface and they will be fine. You may not get big onions because of the lateness of the season but they will be useable even if just as spring onions as the others have said.

          I put in onion sets yesterday that I picked up for 25p not expecting much but won't really lose anything by trying even if I only get spring onions

            Thanks for the advice everyone, didn't realise we could eat them as spring onions instead, so all is not lost.

            Must do better with my labelling next year! Have also got an assortment of unlabelled brassicas and they all look identical. Will stick them in and wait to see what grows.
