  • garlic, could it be ready?

    Hi,

I have some garlic i planted last Nov, 2 types , a regular one (dont know name!) & some bella italiano, they`ve done well growing to nearly 2 foot, however all the bella fell over recently, now the rest is doing the same, does this mean its ready to harvest soon?

My understanding is that if it has fallen over then it is ready to harvest now.

When ready, the foliage changes to a golden dried out color,is it possible the wind/rain have bent them, have a little look using a garden fork or a trowel, depending on your soil, look to see how well it has developed,if the tops are still green, and white bulbs not developed fully, leave them be,they fine for now, peeps on here will be saying when theirs are being dug up,

Mine that I had growing in the greenhouse bed overwinter have been dug up. The tops were falling over and I needed the beds for the toms/peps etc.
Not a brilliant crop, with rather small heads the size of a 50p but were a good way of making sure the greenhoue was utilised all year round.

it sounds a bit early to me - I don't harvest til July and its normally a little hotter here then in engerland.....have a furtle with one and see what its up to -I would leave them a little longer if you dont need the space.

Just posted on the other garlic thread on here that I pulled one of my October sown ones today... Alright size, nothing spectacular but hasn't split yet....
Used it as green garlic with boiled potatoes.. Delish!

I hoiked one of my November sown ones up last week as it was growing too close to another. A decent size, properly split and beautifully tasty. I won;t be planning on pulling the rest for at least another 3-4 weeks though.

Oh I'm looking forward to learning to string up my own garlic. I'll be doing plaiting practice.

No big secret to be honest. This allotment that I took over just last year had been empty for a year or two so the soil was in good condition. I just planted up in October and fed a few chicken manure pellets and some occasional BFB and kept them weed free. I did have them under a small poly tunnel for a while when we were getting too much rain during winter.
