  • Separating beetroot seedlings?

I have a number of (burpee golden) beetroot seedlings in three small peat pots which have grown really quick and look healthy. Will I have any success if I separate these seedlings and plant them individually? and if so at what stage should I try to separate? at the moment they have their seed leaves and just showing the first true leaves.

How many seedlings per pot Cazp?

I sow mine one seed (cluster) per module and end up with about 3 seedlings in each. I plant these out as they are and they grow well.

Hi, one pot only has two seedlings in, the other two have 4 seedlings in each. I had put about two seeds in each pot to begin with.

If I plant out as they are how much space would they need? I was hoping to use the seedlings to fill in some gaps in the raised beds where direct sown had not all germinated.

I would plant them out as they are when they're a bit bigger. They will push themselves apart as they grow and swell.

Would you do the same with carrot seedlings, or are they best separated?

I never grow carrots in modules Bario - they don't like root disturbance at all. If you've already sown them in pots or modules get them planted out asap and hope.

I also grow butler golden beetroot. I start with one seed per module. When they get there first true leaves I replant them into their own pots untill they grow to about 6 or 7 cm with a few good leaves then I plant them out spaced about 12cm

As has been said its best to just plant the carrot seed straight in the ground in a row and then thin them out when they are ok to handle. I think I went a bit mad with the carrot seed sowing, it looks like grass is growing as there's that many seedlings!

I've pricked beetroot out before and it's grown on OK - I didn't realise it would sort itself out over time! So I guess you could prick out if you wanted to fill in gaps, or leave if you prefer? I think I'm tempted to leave them all from now on, and just stick another seed into any gaps which appear .
