  • Hanging Basket Veg

I have never really had success in the past & hate frilly flowering hanging baskets so hoping to grow something else in them I tried toms last year & that wasn't a success.

    Any advice?

I cant get away with hanging baskets the position of my garden and the prevailing winds make the watering requirements too demanding

I've done Toms, Strawberries and flowers - you just need to keep up with the watering (daily, sometimes twice) and feeding regimes.

I grew a hanging basket tom last year cropped well, nasturtiums for the flowers, and chives

100's and 1000's work well as a hanging basket tom. You do need to make sure you feed and water well though as has been said.

I think you need a fairly big basket to cope with the demands of a tomato plant, around 10 litre capacity would be ideal; that's the size of a black flower bucket for eg. If you really don't want to do tomatoes, then herbs and salads will go in a basket, but few of them will 'trail' like a tomato plant. You could add a nasturtium for the trailing element, which has edible flowers? Or strawberries?

I'm trying sutton dwarf broad beans in hanging baskets this year. So far they look great, once the flowers came out.
Not as filled looking as flowers, but so far the coverage is about the same as a few sweet peas. Fingers crossed I get some beans.
I've not had much look with tomatoes in hanging baskets, but its more down to my location being a little too exposed and short summers.

I've put peas & nasturtium in the one at school (generally I hate baskets, they take too much watering). Last year it had 100s & 1000s tomatoes in it, and we got a handful of toms for our efforts. They did much better in pots on the ground.

I've grown gardenpearl and tumbler tomatoes in baskets for years, andthey do really well,as long as you keep up thee feed and water. They tend to be blight free too either because there is no splash up from the ground or because the air circulation keeps the humidity lower.I recon about 10lb tomatoes from a 14" hanging basket.

                    I agree with Snakeshack.

Have grown toms and strawberries in baskets for years always been a success.

If you failed with toms it was either selecting the wrong type of plant I always use Tumbler, or not keeping up with the watering and feeding regime.

I grew LOADS of toms in baskets few years back...very sucessful. had 4 trailing plants to a 14" pot, which was a squeeze but I fed them lots of tomorite and seaweed extract, watered twice a day with crystals to retain water. moved from that house now, and got a basket up in my new garden but its mostly in the shade - any ideas what I can grow in it would be most welcome

                        Hello!

I only have pots and baskets to grow in so I've been busy working my way through the possibilities!

This year I have Sweet Sunshine Sweet Peppers, the plants are very healthy looking though I haven't planted them out yet they do look quite fun!

I also have tried various small tomato type, I've had success with Tumbler, and this year I'm doing Donna and Ruby Red as well.

The rest of my baskets have hanging strawberries. I like some pretty trailing look plants around :-)
