    Soil temperature for direct sowing

    Hi all, quick question:

    What is the long term minimum NIGHT time temperature required for successful germination of direct sown seeds?

    Ps The weather round my way has returned to normal; regular, heavy rain, and cold. Projected overnight temperatures over the next few days could be as low as 2 celcius. The hot spell already seems like a long time ago

          Um, no Chris I can't say I've tried that. An interesting concept though! If barefoot counts, its a tad unpleasant right now.

          Two_Sheds, the seeds I had in mind were French beans. I wondered if there was a one size fits all answer, but obviously not.

            Mine have been in the unheated gh for about a month, min temp had been 5c, so colder than ideal: I started them when it was warm, and then it got really cold again. I lost quite a few, they failed to germinate.


            I've now started planting them out on the lotty (min temp 9c)


            Too cold and you'll set them back, if not kill them. It's not worth trying to cheat with them

              I have sown some more frenchies - last week, both in pots outside and in pots in the cold GH - the GH ones are ahead (root formed - about an inch long), than the outside ones, where as the root is just about showing. I like to have a nose.. though often end up snapping roots and the like
