  • Light Sussex hasn't started laying yet

    Hi all,

I've just started keeping chickens and have 3 hybrids and one light sussex. We got them 2 weeks ago and the hybrids are really friendly. They've also started laying on average one a day.

The light sussex is lovely and very pretty, however is quite nervous and hasn't started laying yet. She's eating fine, is drinking and looks in great condition. No eggs though. I have noticed she does occasionally sleep in the nest box (no egg under her though). She's not out of the house last in the morning, but just appears very timid and nervous.

When should I be worried about her not laying?

    Thanks all,

    Nick.

How old is she? Hybrids do lay earlier than pure breeds. My Sussex usually don't start laying until 22+ weeks. Some much later. They are a lovely calm, gentle breed. Handle her often and you will have a lovely pet.

Try to take her out of the nest box during the night. Place her on the perch with the others. Sleeping in the nestbox is a bad habit and you'll end up with dirty eggs.
