  • Garage Roof

I have a garage with what I think has a corrugated asbestos roof but I'm not sure.
Problem is the flashing along the top ridge is leaking.
If its asbestos that means I cant drill to screw a new flashing along the top.

How do I tell if it is asbestos?
Can I replace the corrugated sheets with corrugated plastic sheets and turn my garage into a greenhouse?
It is in the sunniest part of our small garden.

If it's that grey sort of woven stuff, it probably is asbestos. The local dump might take it with prior arrangement.

      And yes you can

If its grey probably is asbestos, I have the same on my garage. Is pretty safe if left alone. Have you looked how your old flashing is fixed, you may already have holes. If you decide to do anything yourself make sure it is damp first as this is supposed to help.

It could be asbestos, it will depend how old it is. Asbestos sheet sounds quite metallic when you tap it. Its very rigid and generally slightly grey in colour. Asbestos sheeting is probably one of the least dangerous forms of the material.

I've taken in out on jobs many times, you want a paper overall clothing cover with a hood, gloves, mask, goggles and boots. Damp down the sheet before removing nails or screws. Try and take the sheet off whole if possible.

You'll have to contact you local council in relation to disposing of it as you'll need a permit to take it to a recycling centre.

Your local council will have someone who can call out and assess it for you if you tell them you think its asbestos.

Yes it is grey in colour, Ive not had a good look at how the flashing is fixed but it has rusted quite a lot.
I think the garage was constructed in the 1940's/50's.

Do they do fat barsteward size paper overalls?

If its a grey compound corrugatted roof over about 30 years old then yes its most likely asbestos. Though there are companies who will come and test it for you.

The bad news is that unless you can fix the leak without disturbing the stuff you have a very expensive job on your hands.

To remove the existing roof you would need a specialist removal company who unless they could remove it in intact sheets would have to seal the area to ensure the public are not endangered by airbourne particles. They then have to place the waste in special marked, sealed bags and remove it by arrangement to a safe disposal site. They then have to clean the local area usually with vacuums using specialist filters and produce the correct paperwork for you proving the area is safe.

That Steve is going to hurt wallet wise.

However look here Screwfix.com - Power Tools, Electrical, Plumbing Supplies & more product codes 92523, 46079, 46708 and see what you think. I may well be worth a shot in the circumstances.

I've no doubt you've come across a few asbestos pipes in your time pots, the council are pretty good as long as you double bag the small stuff.

Take a picture of the problem Steve and tax our collective brainpower.

The amount of hazardous waste i.e. asbestos that Cardiff council will except is currently put at one bag full.

The specialist bags can be obtained from Waste Management Depot, Lamby Way, normal hours Mon to Fri.

The council have an advice line 029 20872087.
