In the photo you can see a bed with a low hinged debris cage on it, it is 8' x 2'6". Last year I had strawbs in it but because it runs east/west, my neighbours shed cast a shadow on the bed & wasn't very productive. I'm toying around with using it as a carrot bed this year but am unsure as to whether they mind some shade. As always, advice greatly appreciated.

I would give it a go matey. They will get some sunshine during the day and unlike the straws, they won't need sunshine to ripen. -

I grow calabrese and spring cabbbage in a well shaded bed and have never had any probs, but you might have to lift your netting.

I've grown chard in shade during part of the day fine too. Or if you wanted some natural fertiliser - what about comfrey? I have that in total shade, sun, partial shade, dappled shade - it grows everywhere fine
