When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Well now... we get one robin in our garden. Only rarely at that

I think it's because we are in a new development and folk around us are not bothering with their gardens other than cutting the grass. We have feeders out to attract them but no joy. Have been here since Nov 2011
Any suggestions? As you might guess, there are no predators to keep bugs away.

birds will have been used to there being nothing to eat in your garden so just won't be coming around as a matter of course. If you put out a bird table or similar (best not on the gorund as that attracts vermin)
eventually the birds will find it and you will then have regular visitors if there is food to find. Robins are not the best advert. Terribly territorial and may actually be keeping other birds away

We put out some fat balls and a seed feeding station hanging from the basket hooks that we had strawbs on last year AP.

I think that there are far too many BOP around

That could be a factor especially if there are no hedges or similar that the wee birds can duck in to.

Unfortunately it's all fences around here.
