Sowed a few Jalapeños and Cayennes in a heated prop today... Did the same last year on this day and got a decent early crop.

Got any tips for growing chillies? Do they require any special food?

trinidad scorpions! WOW, you like em hot!

I am also sowing some scotch bonnet seeds.

I am a novice chilli grower, but I only water them when absolutely necessary. i.e, when the soil is pretty much dry on top.

And I feed with chilli focus during flowering.

I also, always put some stones/chippings in the bottom of the pots for drainage....

Other than JD85 who says 'sowed in heated prop', do the rest of you use heated prop's or not? I have hab seeds but I was planning on waiting for my prop to be delivered before sowing them. What do you think, wait for it or use old fashioned method? I normally just sow in pots on windowsill but not this early on and even then it's hit and miss really. Thanks.

I use a heated propogator. Mainly because it speeds up the germination process.

I suspect it would be too cold to sow in pots and leave on a windowsill to germinate, at this time of year.

They need lots of warmth and humidity to germinate.

Pots in an airing cupboard would do the trick....

I put my chilli seeds in the vitopod on Boxing Day.

                      Fish
                      Red Scotch Bonnet
                      Cyklon
                      Orange Rocoto
                      Trinidad Morouga Scorpion
                      Cherry Bomb
                      Black Hungarian
                      Hot Lemon
                      Bulgarian Carrot

Notice one of the Fish was emerging yesterday so I'll be setting up my lights today to stop them getting leggy.

Setting up lights? As in UV ones? By the looks of it, i might have to purchase a wee heated prop as my chillies are saying they need around 24c. My house isn't that warm!

Chillies are next on my seed sorting list, and then I'll be putting in the habs and nagas. I use the heated prop until they are through, then into the light cupboard with them.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

I don't have special lights and don't want to buy any nor do I have a light/airing cupboard. What will happen if I leave them in the prop until they are through then put them on the windowsill in the kitchen? Will they go leggy? I don't usually have any problems but I don't normally sow this early.

La la la la I'm not listening! Surely it's too soon to sow chillies? Okay I know the answer to that...you've pushed me over the edge! I need to get some seed compost and a new daylight eco bulb for my desk lamp, then I'll set up the heated prop. Meanwhile I'm going to find my seed boxes and lovingly fondle the packets!
