  • New Allotment

    After helping with my young grandson's plot/s since june, yesterday I received word I had been allocated my own plot. I found it be a bit weedy but have seen many worse on the site. In addition it receives lots of sun so I had no hesitation in accepting.

    Unfortunately weather has been pretty foul today but looks promising for next few days, so I'm thinking of getting my sleeping bag nad tent and taking up residence to give myself plenty of clearing time

    Hello Sheneval and welcome Congratulations too on your new allotment. Looks like you have a couple of "volunteer" helpers too so it may get a bit crowded in your tent!!
    Its a good time of year to get an allotment as you have a few months to get on top of it before the sowing season really starts. Look forward to seeing some pictures of your progress.

      Thanks Veggie - I like your blog - for a moment I thought you were preparing for the floods when I saw your boat :-)

        Funny you should say that - I had a little flood in the house yesterday! Not deep enough to need a boat though

          Welcome to the vine Sheneval.

          I'm sure you already know this, but take it easy on your new plot and just enjoy yourself.

                      Thanks Newton and all others who posted.

                      I intend to try a number of the basics:
                      Potatoes; - probably rooster as my daughter changed her buying habits after a fellow plot holder offered some his his to try and she really liked them. Perhaps one or two others.
                      Onions - (already planted in 2 raised beds in the gkid's plot/s in October under environmesh and seem to have rooted and many are sprouting) - I just copied what my friend on the allotment did.
                      Carrots - (tried in gkid's plot in but most forked although had to thin out many due to good germination - I had put in 3 bags of manure when the plot/s were dug over in June),
                      Cabbages - (again already tried plug plants in gkid's plot but insufficient growing time between June & October meant they did not fully develop, although they seemed to be growing well);
                      Peas & beans and sweetcorn plug plants were all experimented with in the gkid's plot with moderate success - sweetcorn were small but sweet;
                      Lettuce - sowed two different kinds and had a glut but need to grow the type we like - the ones I experimented with were just from packets of seed I picked up cheap at the end of season sales.
                      Garlic - overwintering if I can get them in on time.
                      Leeks;
                      Strawberrys - Already in the gkid's plot
                      Rhubarb - the one thing I grow at home and can't get enough of

                      A big list but my daughter's family eat a lot of veg

                        New Allotment

                        Managed to get up to the allotment for a couple of hours today everything was going well until hail stopped play - soil is easy to work and weeding was relatively easy, mainly grass and nettles, apart from a few docks and a cluster of brambles

                        see before and after pics

                          Carrots and other similar root veg don't like too much manure in the ground and will twist into all sorts of strange shapes to avoid it
