decking board for raised beds

    decking board for raised beds

    i have found a very cheap place to find material for making raised beds. its decking boards but they only measure 84mmx19mm i can make 1 raised bed for £13.

    im thinking the wood will be rubbish.

    anybody else made a bed with this kind of material

    What's your reservation about it? That its too thin, or too narrow, or just too cheap compared to elsewhere?

      What size?

      B&Q do boards that are 2400x91x25mm for £3.48. You could make a 1.2x2.4m bed for £10.44.
      they also do 2400x120x25mm for £4.98 so would give the same size but deeper for £14.94.

        Is it this place ? Garden Decking - Discount Decking *TO CLEAR* 84mmx19mm Deck111022 - Not that I know anything about them but it seems to be thinner than than usual.

              So Goggle does work They have reject decking boards even more cheaply I don't know what the delivery charge is - unless you're buying £100 worth - but worth you adding it into your costs. .
              I've used decking board for retaining slopes - because it was here. I imagine that the higher you want to build your raised beds the thicker the boards should be. So one board high could be any old board, but if you want to go a couple of feet high, you might need the thicker boards and more of them as these boards are not only thin, but narrow too.

                  only going 1 board high. just dont want they to warp or rot straight away

                    I've used decking boards one high to edge the border in the past, Painted them with outdoor wood stain to match the fence and they lasted longer then the 4 years they were in the ground. They were the B&Q ones if I remember correctly.

                      Without seeing it in advance I might be a bit concerned about it turning up knotty, split or warped. My beds are made of B&Q thinner decking, Ronsealed, and two boards high. I picked out/rejected plenty of boards from the stock as I was choosing the ones I bought.

                        You could always do two things to make use of thinner boards:
                        Line them with compost bags or other forms of tough plastic so the wood isn't in direct contact with the soil. 2nd is use any pieces of wood as stakes on the outside of the planks along the long lengths to counteract the soil bulging out.

                              Why not keep an eye out on freecycle/gumtree/ skips for people chucking out wood. I was lucky that my allotment took on a delivery of scaffold boards when we were planning our beds. The scaffold boards work fine. Cheap and saves them from going in landfill. Maybe phone some scaffold companies and see if they have any they are chucking out. Think we paid £1 for a long board and 50p for a short, was all done on a casual/ honesty box style of payment.
