Onion [apart from Spring onion], Aubreys, leeks, cauli, calabrese, p*****ps, peppers chillis, cabbages, sprouts, shallots - do once.

tomatoes - sow once unless you want to try the early ones that we do each year. But mains, sow once.

courgettes - do twice, once at the start and once 6 weeks later. Same with swede.

the rest - spring onions, radishes, lettuce, turnip, beetroot, chard - those are the ones to succession sow.

The clue is in the 'days to maturity' The shorter the days, the more successful they are for succession sowing.

And I'd question some of those days to maturity - where did you get them from? Chillis in 60 days? I wish! If you get that bit right, then the succession sowing follows - the shorter the number the more times you can sow.

Cheers Zaz, very helpful. Will double check the maturity dates. I'm just trying to avoid gluts.

What I do with succession sowing BM is - all those ones that grow fast - pop them into a box and keep that where you do sowing. Then once a fortnight - sow a pinch from each bag/type. You can make life easy by putting all your lettuces in one bag [if you aren't precious about what variety is what], all your radishes in one, ditto all the quickies - and just sow a pinch once a fortnight from March through to July.

I have a big box because I end up doing this all summer long with all my schools.

Must go - 2 mins silence.

I like that idea so basically you are getting different varieties rather than just one.

One last query for the moment. As no preservation is involved can I space out sowings for Cabbage & Caulis as I had a load all at once some of which are still in the ground but looking a bit worse for wear. Thanks

Yup and if one variety isn't right for that sowing period then the others germinate. So you lose less overall.

And in case one is spectacular - keep a note of which varieties are in there, so that the one that is fab you can track back and make sure you get more for next year.

Again, try different varieties with different seasons maturities...Things with long maturity periods don't really respond to succession sowing.

Ok so the clue is in the maturity period and not the spacing of a particular variety. I think this old head is grasping the principle. Cheers Zaz.

I suspect that who ever created that spreadsheet isn't even on the same planet as we are. Parsnips in 56 days!!! Mine sometimes seem to take that long to germinate!!
