  • Sometimes, laziness and scatty head 'CBA - ness' wins the day

    Wahoo!!!

I was given a nub of Turmeric by VVG earlier this year - and I shoved it in a pot in the heated prop. I think it was about April time...and I think she may have originally got it from VC. [A tangled web we weave here on the Vine].

It did nowt. Absolutely nothing. The compost just kept drying up so I turned the heated prop off and left it and all summer I've though - best empty those pots. And every day I've forgotten.

Yesterday I thought I saw a green shoot but it was late, it was dark and I was tired.

But today I've just checked and I have a turmeric shoot!!!

See, I am random and chaotic and messy for good reason.

    WAHOO!!!

I'm obviously not scatty enough Just checked mine and there's no sign of growth - but it hasn't rotted as I can see the top of the tuber thingy.
I tried galangal too but that's not doing anything either. There may have been a third thing but I am sufficently scatty not to have labelled them

Hate to say this but there's 2 - I must have cut it into 2. I have 2 shoots.

I'm just off to sort out a camera shoot.

I cannot express how chuffed I am with them...

They have not been watered at all since around May/June...

I think I'll bring some of my weird things indoors for the winter. Maybe that'll jump start them. Can't have you with 2 shoots, Zaz, and me with none!

If I'd seen it last week I'd have sent one to you with Chris. I can bring one next time I'm in Wales if you want it...as they were yours to start with...

I put some tumeric from a chinese supermarket in a pot and shoot appeared, but seems to have since died since. Guess I didn't give it enough tlc? Is it worth trying it in the coldframe to see if it perks up, or should I just try again next year?

Who knows - I've not watered these for about 6 months. So I'm guessing it's more seasonal and daylight dependent - although it may be to do with us having the heating on at the right time of year.

But I'd bring them indoors - they are not a coldframe type of crop!

I'm going to speak to my Sowing New Seeds colleagues and find out the best thing to do next! As I know they grow these in their greenhouse [heated]...

Ah okay, was likely the cold and winds that got em. Was only really an experiment, I'm surprised they grew at all.

It was from VC originally as a thanks for the toms in pots. VC gave me four and I gave you two. I kept two. Mine did nothing and I am trying to find it - think I may have lumped it in my polytunnel pots. If not, I am going to start giving my stuff to the Grö foundation for nursery care
Still have your strawberries and other stuff missy...

Not in this Morrisons. Have seen them around Leeds/Bradford Morrisons though, for anyone in that neck of the woods.

Don't think its on sale in Cardiff at the moment. I always have a look for something weird and wonderful - especially if I'm near a mirror
