  • How to dry sweetcorn for seeds

I've got quite a few cobs left on my plants for seeds for next year (and the seed swop), should I leave them on the plant or can I break them off and dry them in the airing cupboards? I'm a bit worried about the mices having them all...

You should let the ears dry for awhile outside on the stalk and then bring them in to finish dry. If you leave them out too long in the rain/damp/cold, they may start to get mouldy inside the husk. Husk the ears before placing them in your airing cupboard. Try to dry them in such a way that the ears get air all around them.

What type are you saving? Very few are open pollinated so you might not get what you expect. Also, I seem to remember that ideally you need a very large number of plants to ensure good strong seeds but that probably wouldn't matter for the odd year.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

It's Bloody Butcher corn, about 20 plants, they're about 15ft tall and look amazing. Roughly 2 cobs per plant and are meant to be red but I'm hoping they dry to red as they are a dark yellow/orange colour at the moment.
I think I'll get a few in soon and leave a few longer to have more chance of getting some viable seed. Thanks
