What do i do when all this water has gone???. I have only had the allotment 6 months and have not expeienced anything like this. The water will be contaminated as it is from a beck that has burst its banks. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Must be really heart breaking to see that happen....Hopefully you have got good harvests from it by now...Nothing you can do until it goes down tho and then assess where you are..I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

How awfull for you and the other plot holders,all you can do is wait until it's all gone,then see what damage has been done,ask around if its a regulare occurrance,what makes you think the water might be contaminated,i believe you can get a soil sample analized at a later date,all that work gone,and lovely lettuce,sending you a hug,sigpicAnother nutter ,wife,mother, nan and nanan,love my growing places,seed collection and sharing,also one of these

If it's a beck, which I understand is a stream, then it shouldn't be contaminated. Once the water has receded see what has survived. You may be pleasantly surprised.Comment

. I did have some beetroot, lettuce and little turnips from the allotment thanks Tripmeup, as i said earlier i have only been there 6 months, and it took me 3 months to get rid of all the rubbish and weeds before i could plant. Rustylady, the beck just looks awfull dirty and people are saying it has all sorts of things in it that i don't like to mention !!.
I will post some pics when the water has cleared. Thanks again to you all.Comment

Hope you find the silver lining! Still you have done a lot of work getting it straight in the first place, so if probably won't be too hard to get it going again. Just that you've lost what you put in before.
I wouldn't worry about the beck being contaminated. Unless it's contaminated with something like radiation? The amount of water that caused the beck to overflow will have diluted the stagnant water there, and then flushed it as well. So really you would be getting less of 'unmentionable things' and the whole area might have had a good flushing out. Doesn't make up for the crops you've lost, but might make things even better for winter and next spring.

sorry to see you in this situation,but looking at the forecast this morning it may be starting to recede,that beck should be okay but when all settled,as said ,get it tested,if we get a drier winter again it may help you,good luck with it all..Comment

my land was totally flooded about 9 years ago ...luckily before we started to clear it ...it was completely covered with river water which had come from right up the river - probably started about 100 miles away... some of our original soil was lost and some new gained - but there was no contamination - as Feral007 says it could be for the better in the long run. Where does the beck come down from? If its not industrial it should be OK.
