  • Edible (?) Plant ID

    Ello everyone,

I'm Michael & this is my first post round these parts.

I was wondering if anybody could help with an ID for a plant. It was bought from Home Bargains in what I assume was meant to be was a selection of edible plants consisting of chives, parsley & whatever this mystery plant is.

It wasn't doing too well so I planted it in soil and now it's making decent progress, though the slugs have been having a bit of a feast

I'm fairly certain it's edible but I thought I'd double check, so I've attached a photograph in the hope that somebody round here can identify it.

Thanks, I look forward to sticking around.

    -Michael

    Mispoona?

Have you tried a bit? Is it like a spicy lettuce?

I've only been into gardening a year or two, but I must say it doesn't really seem like other edible salads or cabbages I've come across. Although they are sparse and you can't see them in the photos, it does have the occasional hair sticking out.

As such I've completely bottled tasting it so far.

Is it some sort of oriental mustard? You really must nibble a bit or post me some and I will

^Yeah, I google imaged it thanks. Can't say I really felt it gave me any hope, though there did seem to be a fair amount of variation between the different pictures.

                  What do you think?

Anyway, I'll give it a little taste tomorrow.

OK, Michael, lets go back to the beginning
Did you buy a packet of seeds or some plants? Do you have just one of these mystery plants or several? Did the other seeds/plants grow?

It was a pack consisting of 6 plant pots with plants in - 2 parsley, 2 chives & 2 unknown.

We bought 2, so received 4 of the unknown in all. One of them was decimated by slugs and the rest are currently in a protected area doing rather well.

I'll try and get some HD photos with the SLR.

Oh & thanks for the welcome

Its a strange selection of plants Michael! You would expect the 3rd plant to be a herb of some sort but I don't recognise it at all!

I spoke to my mam about this and it turns out she was swapping the plants in the pack around for the ones she liked best.

So what I believe to be edible, may in fact not be edible at all (though I think it probably is).

I've emailed the company (Country Fresh), who do the packs. Will hopefully get a response.

I'm sure it is edible, but what it is........That's the wonderful thing about Mams - you never know what they get up to when you're not looking

My first thoughts were the same as lottie dolly's idea that it could have been a chinese cabbage of some sort.
