What does a parsnip seedling look like?

    What does a parsnip seedling look like?

    I sowed some parsnip seeds in my new raised beds about 5 or 6 weeks ago, and thought I was being extremely clever by NOT sowing drills. Instead I planted the seeds singly at about 3" spacings to avoid having to thin out.

    However, I now have all sorts of things popping up all over the place (mostly weeds I suspect) but nothing looking remotely parsnipy....!

    Having never grown them before, can anyone tell me (or show me a piccy of) what a parsnip seedling looks like, so I can identify what are weeds and what are not, before I start pulling the wrong things up?

    Little like a cross between beetroot/carrot seed leaves, bright lime green and fatter than carrot the carrot leaves! sorry the best I can do!
    I must say they do look like some of the weed seeds you find!

    The first true leaves look like....still bright green, here goes......
    hold out your hand ( back of hand facing you) and bend over just your finger tips so you have a 'stumy' hand...
    Kinda look a little like that..... I will go now!

      The first two 'real' leaves have quite frilly edges and are quite round in shape, if you look carefully amongst your weedlings you will be able to see them if they are up.

        Hey jules, Just off to lottie, I have some snips up ...will take camera. Usual to plant two or three seeds at the three inch stations....Sorry, had to laugh- i've spent loads of time grovelling on bended knee searching for snips amonst the weeds!....will post later

          I think they are bit like coriander leaves (not so surprising as they are related)

          I guess that only helps if you know what coriander looks like, though! sorry!

                oooh nooooooo! I think I've already pulled some of these up!!

                I thought they looked like baby nettles....!!!!

                oh well at least all the other things, that look nothing like this, can go now!

                  The first year I grew flowers on the lottie Jules I managed to weed up all the flower seedlings and left one type of weed!!
                  I'd made the mistake of sprinkling them too!!

                    I needed to know this too as I had something growing.

                    Looks like they are weeds though

                    Were planted on 31/03/07, should I not be seeing something by now (although I know they are notorious for taking a long time). Didnt do the pre-germination thing though as a first time novice!

                              Thanks for the picture Geo, My parsnips look like carrots!
                              I know some things I havnt labled, but my parships were sown in t-rolls.
                              I shall have another look, to make sure I dont pull them up as weeds.
                              I seem to recall another thread saying the same thing!
