  • Bolted lettuce

    Hi,

This is the first year I have tried growing veg in containers in my back garden. I have 3 lettuces that have bolted, I was wondering if it was worth while leaving them to seed. So I have seed for next year?

It's not worth the bother. Lead them to the compost heap.

    Cheers, Tony.

I do save from lettuces but not from the first to bolt, but from the last. Otherwise you are just saving lettuces with a tendency to bolt.

I left some lettuce to go to seed at the end of last year, more by accident (neglect) than design and was pleasantly surprised to find lettuces coming up outdoors in March this year. Some I left to grow and some I moved. They all grew great. I'm sure that if I'd tried to grow lettuce outdoors at that time of year I'd have failed.

Sometimes, if you cut off the lettuce leaving a stump above ground, it grows again. Works with cabbages too.

And don't forget you can use bolted lettuce to make lettuce soup.

I've been happily eating the leaves from my bolted lettuces and rocket - they've tasted fine.. well, until the lettuce got to about 3ft high, then I put it on the compost heap .
