  • Strawberry grapes

Someone I knew used to grow strawberry grapes. They were small pink / red grapes that tasted a bit like strawberries. Very sweet and nice. Seedless. Grew outside in England and produced a bumper crop each year. Has anyone heard of these and know where I can get one. Thank you.

It has two chances , up or down.

    Hey Divvy,
Funny you say this, my neighbour grows them. I'd never heard of them until I moved here and he told me about them. He gave me a good few bunches last year, i thought they were OK but my girlfriend loved them. They aren't seedless though.

I could probably get a cutting for you (if you can propagate grapes like that, and when it's the right time)

Forgot to mention my neighbour is Italian, and brought them over from his old farm in Italy, he said that they aren't available in England.

Yes, I've eaten them a lot in Italy, one of the few types I like to eat. Hope the growing goes well here, would certainly be worth it!

I would love a cutting if he and you would be so kind. It's funny I just bought some at our market green grocer and they are lovely but seedless so I can't try growing one that way. How do you grow them ? Outside or in the greenhouse.

Hi I know this thread is a bit old now and people may have found the Stawberry grape, but I found this thread though a search on google for it just to see if it has become more popular in the UK. We bought a Strawberry Grape from a place in Norfolk in about 2005/6 and grew it outside on the pergola. It was extremely prolific right from the start. We have moved since then and were in rented accomodation for about 6 years with cuttings in pots outside (we had no greenhouse) and they survived the 2010 winter with minus 13 temps at night (we are in the SW). We have moved again now and am trying to find the right spot in the garden for it. It will grow outside or in a greenhouse (but does go really mad in a greenhouse and I would rather grow it outside). I did find a supplier a few years ago nearer to us in the SW on Exmoor, but I don't know if the guy is still there or still supplies them. Oh and actually ours are seeded. I still have the email from the chap on Exmoor and can give the details of the supplier in Norfolk (who I are still operating and do sell the Strawberry grape).

These sound interesting, can I plant them in open ground? Could you pm me the details of the Norfolk supplier please? Cheers

                            Fragolino

I have 3 such vines. The grapes are not to be confused with the strawberry flavoured grapes promoted by supermarkets. The official name of the vine is Isabella, an American hybrid which was banned from commercial production in France in 1934.
A Sicilian sparkling wine called fragolino (little strawberry) was made from the same variety, which was also banned in Italy. I suspect the real reason for the ban was it is very vigourous, highly productive and totally resistent to mildew and therefore threatened traditional European varieties.
The black grapes have a unique flavour but not really like wild strawberries as the name suggests. They make a poor red wine but as a sparkling white it's quite pleasant.
