Anyone know why this has happened (it only affected 2 out of 3 cucs on the same plant)?
And are they still edible? They are a decent size.

They begin to change colour when they get a bit old and large. They are still edible yeah but may have begun to get a little bit bitter. -
I had a cucumber plant that would only produce one ripe cucumber at a time. the rest would yellow and die off. When I'd pick the ripe one off another one would start to grow and the process repeated.

Did they start off green? If so then they're probably ripening as Leeds Lad said. You need to cut them as soon as they are ready so the plant will carry on producing fruit.Comment

am i right in thinking you can eat a cucumber when it is smaller,it is not only firmer but not got a lot of seeds in,if so great,sigpicAnother nutter ,wife,mother, nan and nanan,love my growing places,seed collection and sharing,also one of theseComment

I had to cut a yellow on off yesterday as it had gone over in the last few days. I just compost them as I don't like them when they're like that but on the whole I pick before it becomes a problem.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

The fruit is old, it is getting ready to drop of the plant and spread its seeds on the ground to produce next years plants. At this stage it will have lots of seeds and in normal circumstances be bitter, not nice eating at all.

Brilliant, thanks.
I only just cut a nice green one off today for the fridge (goes lovely with my pate on toast in the mornings).
There are other little ones ready to grow so I will chop off the 2 yellow ones & be virtuous with my patience

I have grown one called Baribal for a number of years now. Its a mini cumber grows to standard thickness but only about 6" long. It is very prolific so that you can cut a nice crisp fresh cumber every two days or so.

Horticulturally this is the ripe fruit the yellow one.

Leon don't say that now, I threw 2 yellow cucs in the recycling bin earlier.
Although, this variety isn't 'white' Twosheds, so I may have done the right thing.
My daughter just tasted a home grown cucumber in our salad tonight (despite her saying she wouldn't eat anything I've grown) and she commented on how nice it was. She didnt like her radish though.Choccy

Before I throw anything into the compost (not recycling bin) I try it for taste. The yellow cues probably had thick skin but its worth peeling a bit and tasting it. You'll never know how edible something is, or whether its past its best, unless you try it for yourself!Originally posted by Chocolate8me View PostComment
