  • Message for VeggieChicken Re. Root Parsley

    Hi VC

I had zero germination with my root parsley seed and wondered how you got on with the ones I sent you.

Hi Ananke, Sorry to hear that I sowed a few, indoors, early in the season, they did germinate and I planted them out but the weather was so weird that they failed to thrive.
They definitely germinated though. Not much help I'm afraid!

      Thanks VC.

I didn't think of that, it is possible that mine did germinate then fail as I wasn't there much to keep an eye on them.

I'll try them again next year, they sound interesting

I grow them every year now, two different varieties this year - Atika and something else - they will get eaten by slugs overnight if you are not careful. But once they have been up a wee while, they don't seem to be quite so prone to them.
I sowed mine under cover this year, exactly like carrots (because they are prone to carrot fly I grow them next door to each other and observe the same precautions) and I've had an almost perfect germination rate. Dryish, fine tilth, a line scored a centimetre deep and then watered, the seeds dropped in and just barely covered over.
No p*****ps for me this Ch*****s, it will be Hamburg Parsley !

Plant some now...I put some in late last year, about this time of year (now that's an idea...) and had them steamed a la baby carrots. Yummy.
Mark you, our temperatures were lower than yours may be just now, they probably only want something like 55 - 60 degrees.

Maybe I will, Snohare! Perhaps a few in a bucket to see what they're like - as root veg and my ground don't really see eye to eye!

I have been growing some in the tomato patch. Will update if the seedlings survive!
