  • White threads at base of red onions?

Can you help me identify what is wrong with my red onions? They haven't done well this year and there seems to be some white threads around the base of most but not all, the onions. I looked up pictures of white rot, but what I've got isn't fluffy at all, it's more like white stringy threads.I can't see any actual damage to the onions, they are just really small or the foliage is rotting? I bought sets from Wilkos this year instead of Thomson & Morgan. Could it be the sets that are at fault? Will I have to be careful what I grow in that bed now? Are there steps I should be taking to protect the soil and any further crops I want to grow in there? It's the first year I've had any onion problems at all. is it all just down to the weather? Help!

Have you got a photo of these? You sure they aren't the roots? Or are they more like tiny worms?

Trying to sort technology out for a pic soon.It looks more like bright white plastic threads, the only way I can describe, but it's not at all furry or fuzzy etc so don't think it's white rot but could be wrong.will work on posting a pic,but haven't done this before,so bear with me!
