Just been out to the garden and TWO of my courgette plants have burst into flower! Yeah with a bit of luck will be eating my own courgettes by the end of the week. pickings have been so slim this year will be nice to be eating something home grown rather than supermarket stuff.

On the way to the car this morning I noticed I've got some yellow courgettes to pick, it's a lovely feeling. Hope you get a bumper harvest FT.Granny on the Game in Sheffield -

I put six in a massive raised bed that I have been fertilising like mad for a year about 6 weeks ago.
to date 5 have shown some very small signs of growth and one has bitten the dust.
In other news though a "nice fuit de rond" I had discarded and chucked into a pile of other used soil/plants has since picked up and is lookign the favourite to be brought on as a late substitute for the aforementioned one.Comment

My courgette plants are teen tiny, but are flowering fairly heavily, however all the flowers seem to be male ones, can't spot a single embryo fruit at the base of any. Same for my squashes.
I understand the male and female flowers do start coming at different times, to increase cross pollination, but it has been like this for a few weeks now.Comment

By a massive stoke of luck I'd 2 female and one male in flower this morning. I even gave them a bit of a helping hand with pollination in case they were 'feeling shy'. One is my old faithful all green bush which I fell back on after my first batch(es) of seeds failed the other is Tonda di piacenza (the ones that came free with the grow your own mag!) can't wait to try a round courgette!Comment

Nothing I had in the ground survived the slugs. Ive got 2 in a grow bag and three in morrisons buckets all doing pretty well.Originally posted by leonmc0708 View PostComment

My courgettes seem to be the only thing growing well so far!!!
We've had 6 fruits of them so far ( very tasty!) ...and there are further 3 that will be ready by the end of the week !

My courgettes are doing well - we have had quite a few off my two biggest plants, especially the stripey Safari variety. I will be harvesting my first Tonda (round green courgette) tomorrow, it is nearly the size of a tennis ball
Food is scarce on my plot so I am letting the courgettes get a bit bigger than I usually would.
I have also grown a round yellow courgette which is wonderful - Summer Ball... ate this one last night:

I read somewhere that courgette floers are an expensive delicacy when tempurra'd - any one tried this ?

Yes they are delicious! I have also stuffed a few with feta cheese before grilling on the BBQ. Yummy.Comment

Just picked our first 3 green courgettes- cooking in a spag bol as we speak. First one was grated into a salad this lunch time.
Boy does it feel good to be harvesting the beginning of a glut....finally!

I lost one courgette that had rotted at the flower end but I have 3 decent sized ones ready to be picked and plenty of female flowers coming along. The plants are massive and even the one in partial shade is really big with female flowers on it.
(Im actually really chuffed with myself and my first ever attempt at growing courgettes!)
I think the pumpkins will be disappointing though...massive plants and they are starting to swell behind the flowers (which I assume means pumpkins are imminent!) but it isnt warm or dry enough for them is it??
