Garden centres for me My local chain garden centre sells Anya, which is about the only salad potato I like enough to put the effort into growing, and we have another local centre that sells potatoes by pick & mix so I can buy a few main crops. I only have a small plot and don't want fields of potatoes (I had to give away half of my bag of Anyas - not enough room!), so finding a potato pick & mix bar is great for me.

I get most of mine from the local Garden Centres as well. This year I'm growing Pentland Javelin again (it does well on my soil) and am trying Lady Christl and Red Duke of York both for the first time this year.

            JBA/potato days/Ryton/local nurseries.

There is one in Leicester that stocks most of the ones I grow so I usually head over there - this year they didn't stock Mr Little's Yeltolm Gypsy so I got those from Ryton's Potato Day.

You have to do some research sometimes on the best ones for your area and soil and I've now done that, stick with 4 key varieties and most of the time they all come good.

                JBA for me too

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Got mine from a place called JTF. Some of them have done well and other's, not so well.
Will probably go back to my local nursery again next year =)

My local garden centre has a potato tasting weekend in January every year, and they cook lots of different varieties in different ways for free sampling. Although, after a few years of growing potatoes, I have my favourites now which I grow every year I always go to the sampling weekend and, based on taste, I buy a bag of something new to try. They sell all their potatoes by the kilo bag and also loose for small amounts.

Keep a look out for a 'potato day' local to you early next year. Our nearest which is at Caldbeck, had over 100 varieties this year.

As others have said, JBA and Alan Romans are both excellent sources although you will pay a shipping charge when ordering online and this can seem quite hefty if you only want a small amount.

I went to a Potato Day about 3 years ago, and now save my own spuds from those every year (in the salad drawer of the fridge).

I also plant any particularly nice ones I buy from the supermarket (I've just dug up a lovely crop of Tesco Charlottes).

If I find myself short of seed spuds, I buy some from Wilko/Pound Shop

Local GC does a decent selection these days, but my local Allotment Association runs a potato day in late January no more than about 800 yards from home, so most come from there, I'm growing about 25 varieties this year, mostly from the potato day, but I've also got a few in swaps (the Irish Potato Famine potato, Lumper for instance) adn I've raised some from seeds, from that I've got a promising seedling of Russian Blue I call Jayblu, a fabulous (darling) one that has pastel pink flesh inside the the vascular ring and white outside, as it's a Russian blue seedling as well I call it Russian Blush, and this year I have some in pots that are PFA crossed with Sarpo Mira, if I get what I want from that (blight-proof Fir Apple) then it will be Hungarian Fir Apple....

Last year we only bought about 20 seed potatoes as we were renting whilst looking for a house.

This year our garden centre were the first to get potatoes in and I couldn't resist I bought some from there - some Aran Pilot, Pentland Javlin and some Kestrels.

Then our local agricultural, come ironmongers, come whole food shop got theirs in. They get loads of varieties in by the sackload (direct from specialist potato suppliers I presume) and I could buy them in a number of ways (by the sack, by the kilo and individually, for example 20 of one variety and 30 of another). I bought Charlotte, more Kestral, Foremost, Swift, Golden Wonder and they recommended Premier so I bought some of those too.

I ended up with 200 potatoes chitting in my spare bedroom I was a bit like a child in a sweetie shop. No doubt I'll tone this down a bit when we decide which varieties we really like.

We've had the Swift and Aran Pilot (small yields due to the weather, but very tasty).

We had our first Premier for dinner last night - they were very tasty too. It will be Foremost for dinner tonight.
