  • Maincrops have flowered already...

Given the weather and the early flowering would anyone else harvest early. I've always been pretty anal about it before, cutting haulms in September and then lifting two weeks after. I would sooner have something than nothing. I really went to town on my spud varieties this year and don't want to lose all that investment.

My spuds are about to flower too - should I harvest them. I'm worried that I may lose the crop (Just found this lurking on the kitchen)

Seriously with main crop potatoes you should wait until the haulm dies back before harvest.

I think whats happening this year is the lack of sunlight is making the plant think the growing season is coming to an end and they are doing their best to produce next years crop.

Potato tubers normally start to swell as a reaction to the days shortening.

I know and I normally do Potty, but I'm
Paranoid about blight. I'm not getting up the allotment regularly at the moment for personal reasons and the more I tell Mr VVG what needs doing/what to look for, the more I confuse the poor lad He's not a grower you see. I just don't want to lose them!

I've not got blight yet VVG - hang on in there a while. At least if they do get it he can chop the haulms down and the tubers will still be ok.

Will do. I just panic when I send Mr VVG and I get told they are going yellow, maybe brown, actually no they're green. Damn you man, which is it? I shall be glad when I'm back up and running.

Get him to take photos and report back - that's what I get Mr Z to do when he visited on his week off.

a few weeks ago i dug up half a spud bed that i should have dug up last summer .... quite a few spuds survived the winter ..... so if i can leave spuds in for 9 months longer than i should and still get a crop, i'm sure a few weeks won't matter too much ....

I might be pushing my luck posting this but you will notice that I never post on a thread about blight.

Simple because I have no experience at all off the dreaded disease. I think it maybe that I have no other GYOers any where near me.

Do like the idea of sending the other half to take pics. But you know us men make sure the batteries charged.
