My few celeriac plants are growing really well but they are putting a lot of effort into generating tops and flowers - should I remove the flower heads before they open up or is it okay to leave these and just let the plant get on with it?

Sorry, flowering is bolting. You do need to remove the flower heads, but I'm not sure that the plants will make decent bulbs. -
never had a celeriac bolt?.....though have flowered them in year two for seed. 'Fraid RL is right if they've flowered (looks like carrot/parsley flowerhead) then they are rightoffs.
You should never let them dry out...did you have them in modules?
PS tops are good as celeriac is infact the swolln leaf base and not a true root veg, keep tearing off outside leaves to encourage moreComment

Celeriac can never have too much rain. They are a biennial so it thinks it is in yr 2 of it's life - so something must have stressed it out.

I read somewhere it was if there was a cold snap after they were planted out. I think they get confused and think its winter, then when it warms up, spring flowering

bought as small plants from garden centre in a tray. Have broken off some of the heads ... they smell wonderful do you know if the tops are edible?Comment

Eat celeriac seeds?
I lost control of my vegetable beds completely this year. My celeriac flowered, attracted insects and went to seed. Yesterday as I dug them up seeds started to fall so I collected them by banging the stalks on the edge of an old fridge veg container. The result is half a jam jar of tiny, wonderful smelling seeds. I guess I can plant them, but there are so many. Can I also eat them? They do not look the same as celery seeds bought for cooking.Originally posted by dottykat View PostComment
