    Cross-polinated tomatoes

    Don't know how I missed them but I found 3 almost ripe marmande tomatoes this evening round the back of one of the plants! But they are small. One is almost smooth, the other two have ridges, one of those is a bit of a mutant with extra bumps and an inverted 'navel' at the bottom. But like I say all of them are small for beefstakes, probobaly the size of a large normal tomato. I read that beefsteaks are weird plants, indeed I found big shoots growing out the end of trusses with trusses growing out of them!
    So is it a beefsteak thing? A cross-polination thing (I'm growing 6 varieties)? Or a bad weather thing?

    Are they saved seeds, or ones from a packet?

    Cross pollination will not show on plants already growing, it's their offspring which will show the signs of the parents if any cross pollination has occurred

      ah ok, thanks for that. They are all from a packet, except one which is saved (not the marmande).

        Toms are strongly self fertile.

        Often with marmande the first flower is a double...bit like french marigold...nip that off - as you get a mutant fruit that suppresses the others.

        trusses can become confused and develop growing point. esp likely if you are nipping out armpits...marmande is a bush type. You should just cut this off beyond the fruit.

        Sounds like it is a bit crowded in there. reduce foliage a bit so you can see and the airflow is good.

        Don't worry about size...again Marmande need good space, nutrition and warmth to achieve optimum size.....I've got nothing that looks even vaguely ripe yet....bit jealous!
