  • Slug deterrent experiment!

The initial results of my one week old slug deterrent experiment!
I planted out 10 courgette/squash plants, but 5 had special treatment.
Take one clear plastic 500g yoghurt tub (Yeo Valley), cut out the base. and cut the upper part into 1" wide strips, vertically down to a couple of inches from the base. Place this around the seedling and build up earth around it to hold the tub in place.
I've seen yoghurt tubs used like this before but not with the vertical slits. My idea being that the weight of any slug/snail that climbed the outside would drag the slot of plastic back down to ground level. Also, that as the plant grew it could push the slots outwards and not be impeded as it would be if the tub were rigid. So the tub can remain in place all season.
The result : All 5 seedlings inside the tubs are undamaged, whilst most of the unprotected one have leaf and stem damage.
I know it is just one week but, if you're desperate you may like to try something similar

I cut collars from plastic bottles for my bra's.....sometimes it works and sometimes it don't . Might give the slits idea a go .

The Yeo Valley tubs are very thin and flexible, I don't know how it compares with plastic bottles but its worth a go, I think!
