  • Strange things on tomato plants

I was up at the plot tonight and noticed some strange things on some of the plants. They are like tiny tiny little green or clear glass balls on the stems. That's the best way to describe them. They rub off and are a bit sticky. I'm wondering if it rings a bell? Could they be eggs of some kind or something the plants are secreting?
Also noticed a couple of plants have those little bumps you might see at the base of the plant when it's going to put out roots, only these are far up the stem. Any ideas what's going on? I'm thinking they might be over-fed as the tops are curling in alot. I'm only feeding them once a week at the recommended dose of tomato feed. But the planting mix I filled the holes with was rotted manure, compost and a sprinkle of sulphate of potash. Maybe that was too much nutrients?
    Thanks

Hi redser - do you think the plants might be feeling unsupported, or are growing roots higher up because they want to ramble and root into the soil? Maybe they're a special scambling variety, or suffer from vertigo . The little blobby things sound a bit weird though don't they? I'm going to go look at mine later and see if I have them too...

i notice the little bump on the stem like at the bottom and i think because of the continuous rain of last week may have done that...the plants look very healthy and very green so i don't worry... ( or should i ?)

To me they sound like eggs from a insect, im just trying to think of what insect would lay their eggs on a tom plant?

The only insect that springs to mind would be a butterfly/moth!

Any chance of a photo of them?

Could they have been nibbled by an aphid (or similar) & what you see is a plant sap ball I wonder

EDIT ... have a look at the leaf underside are there tiny greenhouse white fly hiding ?? they are sap suckers

Thanks bearded bloke. Never heard of sap balls. Looked it up and I'd say that's what it is. Was having a look around the plants last night and found green fly on the peppers nearby and tiny white 'flies??' (very whispy) on some of the lower tomato leaves. I rubbed out whatever I found. I'll do another pass tonight and hopefully keep them at bay. Cheers
