I'll certainly keep my fingers crossed for your autumn crop. Better luck next time with the over winter ones, or maybe better weather

I've had all my overwintering onions up ....they've been peeled , sliced and frozen . Minus the manky bits. Can;t blame that one on the slugs tho' ........they do however get lots of blame for other stuff

My red overwintered uns are all bolting. If they're rotting I would deffo chop and freeze, or make some chutney. Don't let it ruin your day, there's always next year

Mind if i ask? First time with onions. I know overwintered onions dont keep 'well'. But how long can they be kept for? Would you bother doing the drying out process that you would for spring sown?
                    Thanks

If they haven't bolted or rotted they should be fine so lift and dry them as normal when the time comes. Mine usually keep for a couple months by which time they've usually been eaten. Unfortunately this year they've all bolted

Pulled the first of my over wintered onions today. The foliage had toppled over so I've got 5 nice cricket ball sized onions drying on the rack in the polytunnel. All the red ones have bolted. Don't think I'll bother overwintering reds again, but the problem I had last year with spring planted reds is that they didn't get very big. So I thought overwintered ones (although picked earlier) might get bigger as they're in the ground for longer.

Anyone recommend any varieties for next year to get nice big red onions. (Seed or sets.....)

Sorry to hear of this. It must be so gutting growing them all this time only to lose them. Q what is bolting?? Is it coming to seed?? I've got onions growing some have I think seed heads on so I jyst pinch them off? Is this right? Or do i need to pull them up now? They were planted end of Nov some have bulk out a bit. I was thinking of leaving them in until end July??

Yes, it's when the plant puts its effort into producing a flower so stops putting its energy into swelling the bulb. I think the general advice is to pull them and use them as they don't keep well. A lot of mine have done this, so I've nipped off the top and will be pulling them at the weekend. Almost all the red ones have not swollen so they're coming up too. I think they were radar.

This weather really is starting to be a pain, isn't it? I haven't checked on mine this week, but I have had to pinch a lot of flower heads off this year. Mine have swollen, but nowhere near as much as usual. Hello, sun? Remember us?!?
