  • Milk on your compost heap?

Is putting milk on your compost heap a bad idea?

    Has anyone actually done it?

  • #2
Never done it, have you heard/read about it somewhere? I can't imagine it'd smell very nice in the heat..

According to these, it's not advisable.

We always do when the milk goes off. The animals are lactose intolerant so don't want them having it. Doesn't seem to cause any problems here. So much else 'going off' on the compost heap it doesn't matter.

I'm sure it wouldn't taste as nice as Corn Flakes! Cheers, Tony.

What's the compost for unless it's for the cereal that people didn't have time to eat afore they almost (or did) miss the school bus? And for the milk that's gone orf? And anything else that's making a claim at being a science experiment in the fridge? That's what the compost is for surely?

But here someone has said they've done it rather than just duplicating someone else's words.

Probably depends if you have somewhere else to get rid of the milk! You know what they say about spilt milk!

I don't put anything animal product related on my compost heat as it attracts vermin (the only exception to this is washed egg shells but they are washed . Don't tend to have any off milk anyway since we started getting it by the bottle a few years ago so no a problem for us.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I don't drink milk (another of my oddities) but I do buy it for visitors. Consequently, I often have left over milk - I give it to the dogs or use it in cooking. Can't imagine just throwing it away. Seems such a waste of a cow's efforts.

I throw everything you're told not to on the compost heap these days. Cooked pasta, cooked vegetables, little bits of bone, everything really. Usually milk just goes down the sink though, unless it's seriously lumpy.
