  • Plastic Drip Trays

Does anyone know where I can source some cheap plastic drip trays to go under my ten litre plant pots (growing tomatoes in the greenhouse). Amongst other things I am currently using is the bairn's sledge - something more purpose built would be nice ... but cheap.

A cheap solution would be to go to Morrisons or similar, buy some flower buckets and cut the bottom 3 or 4" off and use them to stand your pots in. Failing that, you can get large gravel trays from Wilkinsons if you have one.

People in the office are always buying celebration cakes from Costco and they have a very useful plastic cover. 5 or 6 inches high and approx 12" in diameter. I stood Morrison buckets in them.

Can you source any of those?
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

Morrison's flower buckets often come in two sizes and one fits inside the other. Pot up into the smaller bucket, with holes in the base, and put it into the larger bucket, left intact. You can water or feed into the outer bucket.

It was the larger ones I was thinking of. I cut them so I can see when the water has run out..........

I know it's not pretty to look at but it works. My tom buckets are inside waste paper baskets I picked up. Each has a length of plastic pipe & a (cork & bamboo) float so I can see at a glance if they need topping up. The inner bucket is not sat on the bottom of the outer bucket but has a wicking system............................
Not sure if that helps really............

I use old dinner plates (charity shops?)

and stock up on end-of-season-sale gravel trays (about 59p each, last donkey's years)

They look more like laundry baskets BM. Last year I used the foil roasting trays from Wilkinsons, three in a pack for less than a pound, but then last year I drowned most of my tomatoes, so ........

As well as gravel trays, I have been known to use a Roses or Quality Street tin and indeed the lids for some smaller plants.....good excuse to eat the Quality Street asap..!!
