Onion sets

    Onion sets

    Hello thinking of starting some onion sets in modules however just been out to have a look in side my cold frame and every things frozen solid
    Can I start them off indoors in a propergator just to get something happening or could this cause problems with bolting ?
    P.s they were red Barron and sturmer in packs of 40 a pound each from morrisons

    Start them off in compost in a tray or in cell packs. So long as you keep them frost free and don't allow them to dry out, they will be fine until soil condititions are good enough to let you plant them out.

      Thanks because it's so cold though the only chance I get will be starting them inside, is this still ok?

        There is no rush to plant or pot up onions sets at the moment..

        Prepare the ground when not frozen plant out march /april they will not grow unless the ground is warm enough for them....

        The idea of using onion sets not seeds is that the hard work of germinating and growing over the cold start of the year including heating is not needed...

        ALWAYS READ THE LABEL ON SEED PACKAGING DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BEAT MOTHER NATURE SHE WILL ALWAYS WIN......

            Thanks allotment grower makes a lot of sense, will my sets be ok to keep for a couple of months?

              keep onion sets and other bulbs in a cool dry cuboard /area..
              check for growth or damaged or soft sets and remove bad ones so the others will not spoil....
              do a little every day...

                My Red Baron and Stutgarter are spread out in a wooden box in a frost free area. Might have a look at them about the beginning of March as by then my forcing spuds will be in the GH and I will be using heat in there anyway.

                A friend as already started some of his off but he has a heated glass box within his GH where he trys to get an early start. Usually with success I must say.

                  I started mine in pots last year and they didn't do as well as the over winter ones but that might have been more to do with our weather in June. That said, i'm going to plant them direct in March in between this years over wintering ones where the gaps have appeared.
