Sorry to change the subject, but have you thought about an edible hedgerow instead, or as well as?

Not a problem! I was thinking more of a nice smelling hedge than a nice tasting hedge, but I'm open to suggestion... The hedge will be around 3m long, and in fairly damp soil and shade. I'd like to keep it thin and tidy - there's a conifer hedge there at the moment, and it's thick and unwieldly, so I intend to replace it.

IMHO Privet smells disgusting, specially when it flowers.

Do you really need to replace the hedge with another hedge (e.g. is it a boundary)?

Ha! I love the smell of privet...

Having said that, no - it's not a boundary, the hedge is within my garden. However, it would provide privacy from the neighbours, as we can see into each others' gardens without it...

I think I'll go with green (or even wild) privet, and get it from a local place so I can see what I'm getting
